Workshop offers free guidance for supporters of domestic violence victims

There’s a new workshop for family and friends of those experiencing domestic violence, and it’s virtual, local, and free. Big Hill Haven, one of Cochrane’s most critical organizations in combating family violence, is conducting the workshops entitled ‘Support the Supporters’.

It’s said to provide “informal supporters with an understanding of domestic abuse and how to support someone in need of help.” ‘Informal supporters’ might include family members, friends, neighbours or casual acquaintances that “provide instrumental and emotional assistance.”

The course is conducted over five Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7 p.m., starting May 5 and wrapping up June 2.

“With domestic violence increasing, it is important that we find ways to build awareness of domestic violence in Cochrane and area and how to prevent it,” said Big Hill Haven board member Joy Steppacher.

“These free workshops will provide the knowledge and tools needed to help someone you care about break free of the cycle of violence.”

Supporters should leave with a stronger understanding of how to recognize and respond to domestic violence as well as provide information on resources available.

The titles of the workshops, in order, are ‘Recognizing Domestic Violence’, ‘Responding to Disclosures of Domestic Violence’, ‘Referring to Local Resources’, ‘Unpacking Masculinity and Engaging Men & Boys’, and ‘What Happens once RCMP have been called?’.

Partner organizations helping to present the workshops include the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter for the first two, then the FCSS & the Family Resource Centre, then the Centre for Sexuality, and then the Cochrane and Area RCMP and Cochrane and Area Victim Services.
