Getting summer camp plans in order

Online registration is up and running for the Town of Cochrane’s official summer camp offerings.

The camps are targeted toward Cochrane kids ages 6-12 years old. They’re all co-ed, and the camps run each weekday from 9 am.-4 p.m..

The theme of the single-week day camps alternate each week between arts & drama, music exploration, and a chef camp.

The arts & drama camp will run weekdays on July 6-10, July 27-31 and August 24-28. Campers can expect to enjoy creating with colorful clay, paint, fabric print and other mediums. In addition to art, campers will also come up with their own drama character and storyline, to be used in drama performances involving costumes, dance and song. Parents and friends will be invited to a special performance and art exhibition on the Friday.

The music exploration camp is held on the weeks of July 13-17 and August 17-21. Campers can learn what it’s like to perform in a band. They’ll get acquainted with a variety of instruments, and even make some instruments that they can take home. In a final performance to an audience, they’ll take the role of drummer, keyboardist, guitarist or singer.

The chef camp takes place the weeks of July 20-24, August 4-7 and August 10-14. The age minimum is a little higher for this one, seven instead of six. Campers will learn some of the fundamentals of cooking with kitchen tools, including measuring out ingredients, kneading dough and, of course, “enjoy rating the results of your hard work”. They’ll also learn how to hold  a knife, crack an egg and make various delicious dishes. In the afternoon, things get a little more creative: the Town says there will be “indoor creative food making using fruit and vegetables and creating food sculptures to eat” and “outdoor fun”.

The arts & drama and music exploration camps are priced at $185 per week, and the chef camp at $215. A link to register is available at
