All four of the Evergreen School Division middle years’ schools are participating in the Career Trek program this year.

Winnipeg Beach School, Arborg Early Middle School, Riverton Early Middle School and Dr. George Johnson Middle School in Gimli are each included out of a total of 70 middle years’ schools in Manitoba. There are still 120 schools on the waiting list.

Career Trek is a non-profit organization that endeavours to offer students comprehensive career experiences while they are still in school. Participants get hands on training, knowledge and an understanding of the soft skills of different industries.

Through WOW or, the wonder of work program, several grades 5 and 6 students are chosen to attend for four terms. Schools nominate prospective students in September based on their potential to complete post-secondary school with additional guidance and support, the student and their family’s commitment to attendance as well as fellowship and respect.

Each term consists of five weeks at a campus or institution like Red River College, the University of Winnipeg or the University of Manitoba. Participants are divided into groups of approximately 15 students including students from other schools and communities to encourage relationship building.

The program runs for 20 Saturdays from October until April. In total each child will experience 80 different careers in 17 different fields.

To increase awareness of each field, activities are engaging, active and practical. Lectures are minimized and homework is not a part of the program.

At each campus, the participants spend an hour a day in four different careers. Students have started to explore career choices this month.
